South Park has had a turbulent relationship with video game adaptations, with some shining examples like The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole standing out from the rest. However, the latest installment, South Park: Snow Day!, fails to live up to the legacy set before it. Developed by Question LLC, this co-op multiplayer action game misses the mark with significant performance issues, especially on the Nintendo Switch, and a lackluster gameplay loop.
The gameplay in South Park: Snow Day! revolves around the player hacking and slashing their way through snow-covered South Park while completing various mission objectives. Unfortunately, the missions feel repetitive and lack the creativity seen in previous South Park games. The combat system is unresponsive, clunky, and fails to engage the player, making the overall experience feel lackluster.
One of the major drawbacks of South Park: Snow Day! is the abundance of technical issues, especially on the Nintendo Switch. Players may encounter significant drops in frame rate, blurry textures, and game-breaking glitches that force them to restart missions. The game’s audio mixing is also subpar, with cutscenes ending prematurely and audio not syncing up with on-screen action. These technical issues detract from the overall experience and make the game frustrating to play. Additionally, the writing in Snow Day! fails to capture the essence of the show, with few memorable comedic moments and a lack of the crude humor that South Park is known for.
Despite its shortcomings, South Park: Snow Day! does incorporate some interesting gameplay mechanics inspired by roguelike games like Hades and Darkest Dungeon. Players can select passive ability cards at the start of missions to enhance their attacks or abilities. These powerups, like the Bull**** card, allow players to turn the tide of combat but can also be used against them by enemies. Additionally, players can collect rare cards to further enhance their abilities and upgrade their skillset through a perk tree. However, these mechanics are overshadowed by the game’s technical issues and lackluster combat system.
While South Park: Snow Day! offers the option to play solo, the experience is lacking compared to playing in co-op. The game structures itself like a live-service game, with missions hosted at Kupa Keep and the ability to adjust difficulty and loadout. However, playing solo highlights the shortcomings of the game, as CPU Allies offer little assistance and fail to contribute meaningfully to combat. This artificial difficulty detracts from the overall experience and reinforces the game’s lack of engaging gameplay.
South Park: Snow Day! falls short of expectations set by its predecessors. Despite some promising roguelike-inspired mechanics, the game is plagued by technical issues, lackluster writing, and unresponsive combat. While there are moments of humor, they are few and far between, failing to capture the essence of the show. Ultimately, South Park: Snow Day! misses the mark and fails to deliver an engaging gameplay experience for solo or co-op play.
