The CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios, Shams Jorjani, recently made it clear that Helldivers 2 will not be receiving a story mode to go alongside its online-only gameplay. In response to a user’s suggestion of adding epic moments and tragic scenes through a story mode, Jorjani straightforwardly shut down the idea, stating that it’s “like building an entirely new game.”
Jorjani’s reasoning for the absence of a story mode in Helldivers 2 is rooted in the complexities and challenges that would come with developing one. He highlights the fact that creating a story mode is not simply a matter of stringing together single-player missions with different objectives. It would involve the introduction of new mission types, non-playable characters (NPCs) with unique voice lines, animations, and artificial intelligence (AI). Additionally, considerations would need to be made regarding the integration of the single-player experience with the online aspect of the game, such as rewarding players with XP and in-game currency for completing missions.
The decision not to include a story mode in Helldivers 2 also comes down to the significant strain it would put on Arrowhead Game Studios. Developing and testing new single-player missions would require additional resources and time, diverting attention away from the ongoing work on balancing gameplay elements, weapons, animations, and user interface (UI) components. With the studio already focusing on implementing over 100 changes and tweaks in the latest patch for Helldivers 2, the prospect of adding a story mode seems overwhelming.
Given the current state of the game and the ongoing efforts to enhance the existing features, Jorjani suggests that players should temper their expectations and refrain from pushing for more additions at this time. While a story mode may not be in the cards for Helldivers 2, Arrowhead Game Studios remains dedicated to refining and expanding the online gameplay experience for its community. As the studio continues to support and improve the game, players can look forward to new content and updates that enhance the overall gameplay without the need for a traditional story mode.
