Digital Extremes, the developer of Warframe, recently announced the addition of a romance system in their upcoming 1999 expansion. This decision was influenced by the success of Larian Studios’s implementation of a romance system in Baldur’s Gate 3. In an interview with GamesRadar+, Rebecca Ford, the creative director of Warframe, shared that the studio had always considered adding a romance system to the game, but had not found the right opportunity to do so.
New Features in Warframe: 1999 Expansion
In addition to the romance system, players will have the opportunity to romance their fellow squadmates in Warframe: 1999. Along with this exciting addition, the expansion will also feature a showdown with a ’90s boy band, adding a unique twist to the gameplay experience. Furthermore, Digital Extremes partnered with Make-A-Wish during the development of the expansion to fulfill a child’s dream of becoming a voice actor.
Rebecca Ford mentioned that the success of Baldur’s Gate and its romance system provided courage and inspiration for the team at Digital Extremes to pursue the addition of a similar feature in Warframe. While they had considered incorporating a romance system before, the opportunity presented itself with the 1999 expansion. The team found a way to integrate this new system seamlessly into the existing Warframe architecture, allowing players to engage in romantic interactions within the game.
Ford expressed her gratitude towards Baldur’s Gate for serving as a catalyst for the inclusion of the romance system in Warframe: 1999. She highlighted that experiencing the romance system in Baldur’s Gate had been one of the best gaming experiences for her, and it paved the way for Digital Extremes to create a similar feature in their game. The success of Baldur’s Gate reinforced the idea that players enjoy immersive storytelling and meaningful character interactions in games.
The announcement of the romance system in the Warframe: 1999 expansion has generated excitement among players and fans of the game. With new features such as squadmate romances, encounters with ’90s boy bands, and the collaboration with Make-A-Wish, the expansion promises to offer a fresh and engaging gaming experience.
