The development of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League by Rocksteady Studios was marred by a series of missteps and challenges, as outlined in a recent report by Bloomberg. Anonymously speaking, staff members highlighted the pressure from corporate owners to create a multiplayer live service game, despite Rocksteady’s reputation for producing stellar singleplayer experiences. This shift in focus may have contributed to the game’s lackluster launch and subsequent issues.

One of the key issues mentioned in the report was the prevalence of “toxic positivity” within the studio’s culture. This toxic positivity manifested in leadership reassuring staff that the game would come together at the last minute, drawing parallels to the successful Arkham game series. However, the reality of the situation painted a different picture, with crucial development time being wasted on prototypes that were ultimately scrapped due to their lack of alignment with the game’s core concept.

Despite Warner Bros. investing a substantial amount of money into the development of Suicide Squad, estimated at around $200 million, the game failed to meet expectations. This financial loss was compounded by leadership challenges, including communication issues and a lack of familiarity with competing games in the market. Studio co-founder Sefton Hill’s departure in 2022 further added to the turmoil, leaving a void in leadership that may have impacted the game’s overall vision and direction.

Despite the setbacks, there have been no reported layoffs at the studio, suggesting a degree of stability amidst the turmoil. Additionally, Rocksteady’s involvement in the “director’s cut” version of Hogwarts Legacy and rumors of a new singleplayer game in development indicate a potential return to the studio’s roots. It remains to be seen whether this new direction will lead to success for Rocksteady and allow them to reclaim their position as a leading developer in the industry.
