In the world of technology, wireless chargers have become a convenient and popular way to keep our devices powered up without the hassle of cables. However, recent research has shed light on the potential dangers associated with wireless charging, specifically through a set of attacks known as “VoltSchemer”. These attacks, developed by a team of researchers, aim to manipulate wireless chargers in ways that can cause serious harm to both devices and nearby objects.
The VoltSchemer attacks utilize innovative methods to interfere with the communication between the wireless charger and the device being charged. By manipulating the voltage through the use of an attached interposing device, the researchers were able to disrupt the charging process and bypass safety systems built into the charger. This led to three primary forms of attack: overcharging the device, transferring large amounts of energy to objects around the charger, and injecting voice commands into the device.
The Potential Risks
The consequences of these attacks are concerning, to say the least. In one scenario, a Samsung S8 reached a dangerous temperature of 170°C during testing, highlighting the risk of device overheating and potentially catching fire. The ability to transfer large amounts of energy to nearby objects such as USB sticks, SSD drives, and even car key fobs, poses a significant threat to personal safety and property. In one extreme case, a car key fob exploded its own battery as a result of the attack, demonstrating the potential for serious damage.
While the VoltSchemer attacks showcase the vulnerabilities of wireless chargers, the ultimate goal of the research is to encourage manufacturers to prioritize security and safety in their designs. By presenting their findings to the manufacturers of the charging stations used in the study, the researchers hope to spark a conversation about addressing these vulnerabilities and implementing safeguards to prevent such attacks in the future. It is essential for manufacturers to take these risks seriously and proactively strengthen the security measures in their products.
Ensuring Safe Charging Practices
As consumers, it is crucial to be aware of the potential risks associated with wireless chargers and take precautions to protect our devices and personal safety. While the convenience of wireless charging is undeniable, it is important to use reputable and secure charging stations, monitor device temperature during charging, and be cautious of any unusual behavior or overheating. By staying informed and vigilant, we can minimize the risks of falling victim to malicious attacks like VoltSchemer and ensure the safe and effective use of our devices.
