Instagram has recently introduced an expansion to its “limits” feature, allowing users to have more control over their interactions on the platform. This new safety control feature enables users to hide direct messages and comments from accounts that may be harassing them. While initially designed to help creators deal with online harassment campaigns, this feature is available for anyone facing unwanted messages and comments.
Unlike the previous version of limits, where users could only hide content from recent followers or those who do not follow them, the updated feature now allows users to mute incoming messages from everyone except those on their close friends list. This adjustment provides users with the ability to filter out unwanted noise without disconnecting from a supportive community.
By limiting interactions to only those on the close friends list, users will only see direct messages, tags, and mentions from individuals they have added to this designated group. Those not on the close friends list can still interact with posts, but their updates will not be visible to the user who has set limits. Additionally, the accounts that have been restricted will not be notified that their content has been hidden.
Users can enable limits by accessing their profile, selecting the hamburger menu in the top-right corner, and choosing the “Limited Interactions” option. From there, users can toggle on limits for accounts that are not following them, recent followers, or everyone except close friends. The feature allows users to set limits for up to four weeks, with the option to extend the duration if needed.
In addition to the expanded limits feature, Instagram has also enhanced its restrict feature. Users can now prevent a specific account from tagging or mentioning them, further controlling their online interactions. These additional features come at a time when Instagram is under increased scrutiny regarding the safety of its young users, prompting the platform to implement measures to protect vulnerable individuals.
The introduction of the expanded “limits” feature on Instagram reflects the platform’s commitment to enhancing user safety and privacy. By offering users more control over their interactions and the content they are exposed to, Instagram aims to create a safer and more positive online environment for all its users. As social media platforms continue to evolve, implementing robust safety features like these will be crucial in addressing online harassment and ensuring the well-being of users.
