Valve went above and beyond to mark the launch of the Steam Deck OLED by constructing a massive orb using 100 OLED prototypes. This unique initiative was taken to create the launch trailer using practical photography rather than relying on computer-generated imagery. Valve’s decision to use these prototypes as the primary light source for the trailer showcased their innovative approach to marketing and product promotion.
To provide insight into the creation of the orb and the coordination of 100 Steam Deck OLED prototypes, Valve released a timelapse video and blog post detailing the entire process. The team at Valve saw the potential of utilizing the brightness of the OLED screens to create a visually stunning effect for the trailer. The decision to use actual Steam Deck OLEDs as the sole light source was met with both excitement and uncertainty, leading them to embark on this ambitious project.
The construction of the orb required a unique set of materials and expertise. Valve’s shopping list for the shoot included 100 “old OLED prototypes”, a custom-milled and prefabricated aluminum frame, bonded network switches, a mobile networking rack, spare network cables, Deckmate Steam Deck mounts, and various 3D printed clips and brackets. This extensive list highlights the attention to detail and technical capabilities of the Valve team in bringing their vision to life.
Controlling all the screens within the orb presented technical challenges that Valve had to overcome. Leveraging the Linux PC capabilities of the Steam Deck, Valve used OBS with a specific plugin called NDI to synchronize the display of content across the networked devices. Additionally, creating a video template that eliminated distortion when streaming content onto the orb required intricate mapping of screen locations and high-resolution animation files. The combination of hardware and software solutions showcased Valve’s ability to innovate in a complex production environment.
While the orb served as the centerpiece for the launch trailer, Valve’s commitment to creativity led them to keep the setup intact after filming. The orb now resides in the lobby of Valve’s offices, serving as a glowing testament to the company’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of technology and design. Visitors from around the world are welcomed to witness the orb’s brilliance, showcasing Valve’s unique approach to creating immersive experiences.
The creation of the Steam Deck OLED orb not only highlighted Valve’s technical prowess but also emphasized their commitment to innovation and creativity in product promotion. By utilizing practical photography and a hands-on approach, Valve demonstrated the power of combining art and technology to create a captivating visual experience. The legacy of the orb serves as a reminder of Valve’s ability to think outside the box and deliver extraordinary results in both marketing and design.
