Recently, former employees of Best Buy’s Geek Squad revealed that there were mass layoffs within the company. According to 404 Media, a former Geek Squad agent shared that they received an email notifying them of a work from home event regarding a “company change.” The layoffs were abrupt and devastating for many employees. Some impacted workers even referred to themselves as belonging to a Geek Squad “sleeper cell” on Reddit, indicating their solidarity with others who were let go.
Best Buy’s CEO, Corie Barry, explained during the company’s last earnings call that the layoffs were part of an effort to reallocate resources. This reallocation is aimed at focusing on areas like AI and refining the company’s overall strategy. Barry pointed out “macro factors” affecting consumer spending on electronics, such as a drop in sales post-pandemic and a lack of significant innovation driving purchases. She also emphasized the need to improve operational efficiency within Geek Squad repair operations and customer care experiences by leveraging analytics and technology, including AI.
In addition to the layoffs, Barry mentioned plans to revamp physical store spaces by removing physical media and updating departments related to digital imaging, computing, tablets, and smart home products. Best Buy is also exploring new opportunities in the realm of health care, utilizing the expertise of Geek Squad agents to aid in the integration of technology for in-home health services.
Former and current Geek Squad employees have voiced concerns about the job’s high turnover rate, low pay, and limited opportunities for advancement. Glassdoor estimates the pay range for Geek Squad agents to be between $16 and $21 per hour. This low pay scale has led to difficulties in retaining talent and providing motivation for employees to stay in their roles. Additionally, with the current job market offering similar roles at competitive pay rates, the layoffs at Best Buy present challenges for affected workers seeking new employment opportunities.
