The critical success of Baldur’s Gate 3 has undoubtedly brought great joy to the developers at Larian Studios. However, in a recent statement, CEO Swen Vincke revealed that the constant need to attend various award ceremonies was actually beginning to hinder the development process. Vincke mentioned that the need to send developers to collect awards was starting to “affect development.”
Vincke went on to explain that the overwhelming success of Baldur’s Gate 3 had led to a significant number of awards being won by the game. This resulted in the need to send different teams to collect awards at different ceremonies. The continuous attention and success of the game were beginning to take a toll on the team. Vincke expressed that the constant need to attend award shows was surprisingly draining on the team’s soul.
The Search for Closure
Despite the initial thrill of winning awards, Vincke expressed a desire for closure. He mentioned that while celebrations are great, the need to keep attending award shows was preventing the team from moving forward. The continuous success of Baldur’s Gate 3 meant that the team was unable to find closure at the end of the project, leading to emotional strain.
Turning Focus to Future Projects
Vincke hinted at his desire to shift focus away from Baldur’s Gate 3 and towards new projects in the pipeline. He expressed his eagerness to work on the two other RPGs that Larian Studios is currently developing. However, despite this desire to move on, the constant need to attend award shows for Baldur’s Gate 3 was making it difficult for the team to shift their focus entirely.
As the awards for Baldur’s Gate 3 continued to pour in even a year after its release, it became evident that the success of the game was unmatched. While the recognition was undoubtedly appreciated, the continuous need to travel for award shows was proving to be challenging for the team. The record-breaking awards run of Baldur’s Gate 3 put the team in a position where closure seemed out of reach.
