The Impact of AT&T’s Next Up Anytime Upgrade Program on Consumers

AT&T recently announced the launch of a new early upgrade program called Next Up Anytime for customers on an AT&T installment plan. This program, set to begin on July 16th, comes at a cost of $10 per month, which is a jump from AT&T’s previous $6 per month Next Up add-on. The new program gives subscribers the flexibility to upgrade their smartphones after making just one installment payment, with the option to upgrade up to three times per year.

While the Next Up Anytime program seems to offer customers more frequent upgrade options, it comes at a higher monthly cost compared to the previous Next Up add-on. Customers who opt for Next Up Anytime can upgrade their devices once they have paid off 33% of the total cost, which is a significant improvement from the 50% required for the older plan. This means that customers signed up for a 36-month installment plan can potentially upgrade after just one year, enabling them to take advantage of new smartphone models sooner.

Despite the convenience of being able to upgrade more frequently, there are financial implications to consider. With the new program, customers who choose to upgrade after one installment payment will not be eligible for any upgrade promotions and will have to pay full price for the new device. Additionally, there is a limit of three upgrades per year under the Next Up Anytime program, which may not be suitable for consumers who frequently desire the latest technology.

When AT&T introduced its Next monthly fees for annual upgrades back in 2013, there were concerns about the potential for high costs due to the sliding scale of installment fees. The newer Next Up Anytime program simplifies the pricing structure by offering a flat rate. However, for individuals who regularly want to switch out their phones, this could still prove to be an expensive way to stay up to date with the latest devices.

Consumer Scenario

For example, an AT&T customer who purchased a Google Pixel 8A in May and is dissatisfied with the camera features could potentially upgrade to a new device under the Next Up Anytime program. They could switch to a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 in August, followed by the Google Pixel 9, the iPhone 16, and the Samsung Galaxy S25 within a year. While this scenario showcases the flexibility of the program, it also highlights the cost implications of frequent upgrades.

AT&T’s Next Up Anytime upgrade program offers customers greater flexibility in upgrading their smartphones more frequently than before. However, the higher monthly cost and restrictions on upgrade promotions may deter some consumers from taking full advantage of the program. It is essential for consumers to carefully evaluate their upgrade needs and financial considerations before opting into the Next Up Anytime program.
