Hyundai recently announced its plans to introduce a new electric vehicle to the US market – the Ioniq 9. This three-row SUV will be manufactured at the company’s factory in Georgia, signaling Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its presence in the plug-in market.
The Ioniq 9 will be based on the Concept Seven platform, first unveiled in 2021. This platform is part of Hyundai’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which also supports other models such as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, Kia EV9, and Genesis GV60. The decision to build the Ioniq 9 in the US will make Hyundai eligible for the federal EV tax credit of $7,500.
Hyundai plans to showcase a production version of the Ioniq 9 at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show. The company’s President and CEO, Jae Hoon Chang, expressed confidence in the model’s potential success in the North American market. Additionally, Hyundai aims to increase its offering of hybrid vehicles to meet the current consumer demand.
In response to growing consumer interest in electric vehicles with longer ranges, Hyundai is exploring the development of Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs). These vehicles, which can provide over 560 miles of range when fully charged, could be a game-changer in the industry. By incorporating small gas engines for recharging purposes, EREVs offer a practical solution for drivers concerned about range limitations.
The Concept Seven, on which the Ioniq 9 is based, boasts impressive features such as fast charging capabilities and a range of over 300 miles. Its dimensions rival those of large SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, with a wheelbase that stretches 10.5 feet. The bold design of the Concept Seven, including its extra-tall grille, positions it as a standout in the electric SUV market.
Hyundai’s announcement of the Ioniq 9 SUV represents a significant step forward in the company’s electric vehicle strategy. By focusing on popular segments and innovative technologies like EREVs, Hyundai is poised to capture a larger share of the growing EV market.
