Southwest Airlines, one of the major carriers in the United States, has recently announced a partnership with Archer Aviation, an urban air mobility startup. This collaboration aims to bring air taxi services to the masses, using Archer’s innovative battery-powered, four-passenger tilt-rotor Midnight aircraft. The aircraft is designed to provide vertical takeoff and landing capabilities, making it a unique addition to the aviation industry.
Archer claims that their air taxis can significantly reduce travel time, with trips that typically take 60-90 minutes by car now being completed in just 10-20 minutes. This bold claim showcases the potential of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) technology to revolutionize intercity travel. With increasing interest from major airlines like Southwest, the future of air mobility is looking brighter than ever.
Archer Aviation’s Impressive Milestones
Archer Aviation made headlines when it came out of stealth in spring 2020, attracting attention with its talented team and cutting-edge aircraft designs. The company’s $1 billion order from United Airlines further solidified its position in the market, along with a partnership with global automaker Stellantis for mass production of eVTOL craft. With a recent Part 135 air carrier certification from the FAA, Archer is now one step closer to launching its on-demand air taxi service by the end of 2025.
While Archer and other eVTOL companies are making significant strides in the industry, full FAA certification remains a challenge. The slow-going certification process has created uncertainty around the commercialization of eVTOL aircraft, especially after the FAA reclassified them as “power lift” aircraft.
