Geoff Keighley, the creator of Summer Game Fest, recently expressed his desire for Nintendo to become more involved in the event. While major first parties like Microsoft and PlayStation have been a part of the festivities, Nintendo has yet to make a significant appearance. Keighley mentioned in a Q&A session that he would love to see Nintendo join the lineup, stating, “Never really had Nintendo be a big part of Summer Game Fest yet, we always hope that it’ll be the right year for them to come in and get involved, but it hasn’t happened yet.”
Keighley acknowledged that each gaming company operates on its “own playbook and plan,” especially during key times of the year. He emphasized the vast number of games in the industry and the challenges of covering everything in a single event. Despite the competition for attention, Keighley believes that spreading announcements across different platforms and events allows for a diverse and engaging experience for the audience. He described Summer Game Fest as more than just a two-hour show but rather a comprehensive time period where the gaming community can collectively experience various reveals and updates.
Nintendo’s Upcoming Showcases
Nintendo has announced plans for a Direct showcase in June 2024, focusing on software for the Switch and upcoming releases for the latter half of the year. Moreover, a Switch “successor” reveal is expected within the current fiscal year. While fans eagerly anticipate these events, Keighley has cautioned against setting unrealistic expectations, hinting that certain highly anticipated titles, such as Sora’s next adventure, may not be featured at this year’s Summer Game Fest.
As the gaming industry continues to evolve, events like Summer Game Fest play a crucial role in connecting developers, publishers, and players. While Nintendo’s involvement remains uncertain, Keighley’s optimism and hope for their participation signal a potentially exciting addition to the lineup. As fans eagerly anticipate upcoming showcases and announcements, the evolving landscape of gaming events promises a dynamic and engaging experience for all involved. Regardless of individual company strategies, the collaborative nature of events like Summer Game Fest showcases the unity and diversity of the gaming community.
