The use of floppy disks, once considered a relic of the past, is still evident in some critical systems today. For instance, San Francisco’s Municipal Transportation Agency continues to rely on three 5.25-inch floppy disks to load the software needed to operate the central servers for its Muni Metro light rail line. This reliance on decades-old technology poses a significant risk, especially considering the potential for data degradation over time.
Jeffery Tumlin, the director of transportation for the SFMTA, highlights the dangers of using a floppy disk-based system in today’s modern age. With each passing year, the risk of catastrophic failure increases due to the aging nature of the floppy disks. Given that the system was implemented in 1998 and was only expected to last 20 to 25 years, the SFMTA is pushing the limits of its reliability.
The SFMTA’s reliance on floppy disks is not an isolated case. Other critical systems, such as Boeing’s 747 fleet and the US nuclear arsenal, have also been found to use floppy drive-based technology in recent years. The continued use of this outdated technology underscores the importance of updating and modernizing systems to prevent potential disasters in the future.
While the SFMTA acknowledges the need to update its train control system to eliminate its dependence on floppy disks, the process has been plagued by delays, including those related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The agency’s goal is to complete the project by 2029-2030, a timeline that may be too late considering the risks associated with using aging technology.
Despite the widespread shift to more advanced storage technologies, the floppy disk continues to linger in certain sectors of the industry. Its resilience and ability to withstand the test of time are commendable, albeit somewhat impractical in today’s fast-paced technological landscape. The continued presence of floppy disks serves as a reminder of the importance of adapting to change and embracing newer technologies to avoid being left behind.
While the floppy disk may evoke nostalgia for some, its persistent use in critical systems such as transportation and defense highlights the need for constant innovation and modernization in the tech industry.
