The Delay in Nvidia’s “Blackwell” B200 AI Chip Production

Nvidia recently informed Microsoft and another cloud provider about a delay in the production of its highly anticipated “Blackwell” B200 AI chips. This delay is due to a design flaw that was discovered late in the production process, significantly pushing back the timeline for the release of these chips.

The B200 chips are intended to be the successor to the extremely popular H100 chips that are currently driving the artificial intelligence cloud landscape. Companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta have eagerly awaited the release of these chips, as they are crucial for their AI operations. However, the delay in production means that these companies will have to wait even longer before they can get their hands on the new chips.

According to Nvidia spokesperson John Rizzo, production of the B200 chips is expected to ramp up in the second half of the year. However, large-scale shipments of the chips are not expected until the first quarter, as Nvidia is currently working on conducting additional test runs with chip producer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company to ensure the quality and reliability of the chips.

The delay in the production of the B200 chips comes at a time when several other tech companies, including AMD, are also working on developing their own AI chip competitors. This delay could potentially give these competitors an opportunity to gain an edge in the market, as Nvidia struggles to meet the demand for its chips.

The delay in the production of Nvidia’s “Blackwell” B200 AI chips is a significant setback for the company and its customers. The design flaw discovery has forced Nvidia to reevaluate its production timeline, causing frustration among industry leaders who were eagerly anticipating the release of these chips. As Nvidia works to address the issue and ramp up production, it remains to be seen how this delay will impact the company’s position in the highly competitive AI chip market.
