Playing the same game repeatedly may seem harmless, but Palworld community manager John “Bucky” Buckley disagrees. According to Bucky, constantly playing the same title can be detrimental to one’s health. He discussed his concerns with YouTuber Going Indie, highlighting the negative impact that live-service games and “dead” games can have on gamers, developers, and the gaming media. Bucky emphasized the importance of exploring new games instead of fixating on one title indefinitely.
Bucky expressed his apprehension about the prevalence of “soulless” live-service games created by large companies. He noted that there has been a saturation of such games in the market, leading to what some may consider a live-service game bubble. While games like League of Legends and Dota 2 are designed to be played long-term, Bucky believes that developers are increasingly trying to compel gamers to engage with titles that are not inherently meant to be played for extended periods.
To combat the potential negative effects of focusing on one game, Bucky advocated for players to explore a wide variety of indie games. He encouraged gamers to try out different titles, regardless of their popularity or mainstream appeal. Bucky’s suggestion aligns with his previous statements criticizing the narrow discourse surrounding Palworld, a game that defied expectations by attracting a massive player base despite initial skepticism.
Palworld, developed by Pocketpair, achieved significant success with 25 million players within its first month of release. Despite allegations of copying elements from popular franchises like Pokemon, the game has not faced legal action from The Pokemon Company. Moreover, Pocketpair recently announced a partnership with Sony Music Entertainment, solidifying the game’s position in the industry. Bucky’s perspective on game diversity and the dangers of fixating on a single title underscores the evolving landscape of gaming and the importance of exploring new experiences.
