Recently, the Xitter account for H2M, a mod project aiming to recreate the classic Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer within Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered, announced that they had received a cease and desist from Activision Blizzard. This news came as a shock to many fans who were eagerly anticipating the release of the highly-anticipated mod.
The project lead and ‘founder’ of H2M, Watchful Wolf, took to YouTube to speculate on the reasons surrounding Activision’s decision to shut down the mod. Watchful Wolf mentioned that the popularity H2M was gaining and its proximity to the release of Black Ops 6 may have played a role in Activision’s decision. They did not want H2M to interfere with the potential sales of Black Ops 6, leading to the cease and desist.
Following the announcement of the cease and desist, the mod leaked online through several Discord servers, and around 800 people were reported playing it at the time of writing. Additionally, there is a petition with over 8000 signatures titled “Let H2M-Mod Live in peace,” which highlights the community’s support for the mod and its creators. The petition argues that H2M has revived interest in a dormant game and even helped Activision earn money from a title many had considered dead.
The petition urges Activision to reconsider their decision and collaborate with the creators of H2M rather than shutting down the project. It references Rockstar’s approach with FiveM, a multiplayer mod for GTA V, as an example of how game developers can partner with mod creators to enhance the gaming experience for players. The community believes that Activision should recognize the efforts of the H2M creators and the positive impact the mod has had on the game’s popularity.
Amidst the controversy surrounding the H2M mod, Activision is reportedly aiming to reduce the install size of the next entry in the Call of Duty series. While the company has not officially responded to the community’s plea regarding H2M, their efforts to address concerns about the game’s file size suggest that they are responsive to player feedback and are willing to make changes to enhance the gaming experience for players.
The cease and desist issued by Activision Blizzard against the H2M mod has sparked debate within the gaming community regarding the rights of mod creators and the role of game developers in supporting user-generated content. The community’s overwhelming support for H2M and the petition urging Activision to reconsider their decision demonstrate the passion and dedication of gamers towards preserving and enhancing their favorite games. Only time will tell if Activision will respond to the community’s plea and potentially collaborate with the creators of H2M to bring the mod back to life.
