Sony is rumored to be in the works of releasing a PlayStation 5 Pro model that is speculated to feature a significantly more powerful GPU than the current PS5 models. The leaked technical overview document, codenamed Trinity, suggests that the PS5 Pro may offer up to three times faster GPU performance compared to the existing PS5. With 67 teraflops of 16-bit floating-point calculations, the performance improvement is estimated to be around 45 percent over the standard PS5.
In addition to the GPU performance boost, the PS5 Pro is expected to provide up to three times the ray tracing performance, with some instances seeing up to four times the improvement. This enhancement is predicted to elevate the overall gaming experience by delivering more realistic lighting and reflections in games.
Furthermore, the leaked documents reveal a new feature called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which uses machine learning for image upscaling similar to Nvidia’s DLSS or AMD’s FSR. This technology is anticipated to support upscaling to 8K resolutions in the future versions of the PS5 Pro and aid in enhancing ray tracing capabilities on the upcoming hardware.
While the credibility of the source, Moore’s Law is Dead, has been questioned in the past, Tom Henderson’s recent report on Insider Gaming provides additional validation to the rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro. Sony’s own first-party studios have reportedly been testing PS5 Pro development kits since September, with third-party developers gaining access in January. The target release date for the PS5 Pro is speculated to be during the holiday period of 2024, aligning with previous reports indicating a November 2024 launch.
The potential release of the PlayStation 5 Pro with its enhanced GPU performance and ray tracing capabilities has sparked excitement among gamers and industry enthusiasts. The anticipated advancements in gaming technology are expected to elevate the gaming experience to new heights, providing more immersive and visually stunning gameplay for players. With Sony aiming to stay competitive in the console market, the rumored features of the PS5 Pro signal an exciting future for the gaming community.
