Recent changes in the Call of Duty gaming experience have stirred up a mix of excitement and frustration among players. With the upcoming launch of Black Ops 6, Activision is implementing a series of updates aimed at streamlining the installation process and reducing the overall file size of the game. While these changes promise a smaller footprint and easier access to game content, they also come with their fair share of challenges that players will need to navigate.
One of the key changes that players can expect is the decoupling of Call of Duty: Warzone from other annual titles. This means that when you purchase an annual title, you will only download the files for that specific game by default. This shift is part of Activision’s effort to make the Call of Duty launcher more user-friendly and efficient. The goal is to provide players with more control over what they are downloading and to streamline the installation process for a smoother gaming experience.
Expanded Texture Streaming Features
In addition to the decoupling of Warzone, players can also look forward to expanded texture streaming features. This new system allows for content that is less frequently used to be cycled to a streaming cache, reducing the need to download it directly to your device’s storage. While this may result in older content briefly appearing at a lower quality, the streaming cache will ultimately lead to a more seamless gameplay experience. Players will have the option to choose between an “optimized” setting for higher-fidelity visuals or a “minimal” setting for lower bandwidth requirements.
The installation process for these updates will begin with a larger initial download, followed by several weeks of restructuring files to prepare for the rollout of the new interface in mid-October. Despite the necessary downloads, players can rest assured that their overall install size will not increase as a result of these updates. Instead, Activision is focusing on optimizing file organization and streamlining the gaming experience to ultimately decrease Call of Duty’s footprint.
For PS5 players, the installation process will involve four separate downloads – one at the console level, one within the Call of Duty launcher, one with Modern Warfare 3, and one within Warzone. This added complexity is due to differences in file organization on the PS5. While this may be an extra hassle for PS5 players, the end goal is to provide a smoother and more efficient gaming experience for all players.
To thank players for their patience during this transition period, Activision is offering a free community pack to all players who log in after the start of Season 5 Reloaded. This pack includes 10 1-hour double player XP tokens, 10 1-hour double weapon XP tokens, and 10 battle pass token tier skips. While these offerings may not alleviate the frustration of big downloads, they serve as a gesture of appreciation towards the Call of Duty community.
The changes being implemented in the Call of Duty gaming experience are both exciting and challenging for players. By decoupling Warzone, expanding texture streaming features, and optimizing file organization, Activision aims to create a more user-friendly and streamlined gaming experience. While these updates may initially require larger downloads and pose challenges for PS5 players, the long-term benefits promise a smaller, cleaner Black Ops 6 experience for all players.
