Hideki Kamiya, the renowned director responsible for hit games such as Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, and Bayonetta, recently parted ways with Platinum Games, jokingly referring to himself as “unemployed.” However, despite this change in his career, Kamiya made it clear that he has not retired as a game creator. In a conversation with fellow Capcom veteran Ikumi Nakamura, he expressed his desire to work on sequels for two of his beloved creations – Okami and Viewtiful Joe.
Kamiya emphasized that he cannot undertake these ambitious projects alone and stressed the importance of collaborating with like-minded individuals who share his passion for game development. He highlighted the need to “connect with friends who will do it together,” indicating that he envisions a collaborative effort in bringing these sequels to life.
Reflecting on Okami, a game that garnered considerable acclaim but left its story unresolved, Kamiya shared his sentiments about the unfinished narrative. He expressed regret about leaving the story midway and acknowledged the responsibility that creators have in fulfilling fans’ desires for sequels. Kamiya appealed to Capcom to join forces in bringing closure to Okami’s story, stating, “Creators have a duty to create sequels fans are wanting to see.”
In addition to Okami, Kamiya expressed a strong desire to work on Viewtiful Joe 3, the next installment in the quirky side-scrolling beat ’em up series. Despite the cult following of the Viewtiful Joe games, Kamiya lamented that the franchise has not received the recognition it deserves. He attributed this to the limited audience that the games have reached, suggesting that a third installment could garner more widespread attention.
As Hideki Kamiya sets his sights on developing sequels to Okami and Viewtiful Joe, he exemplifies his commitment to honoring fans’ expectations and staying true to his creative vision. Collaborative efforts and a sense of duty drive his ambition to revisit these beloved franchises and deliver new experiences to players worldwide. With the support of Capcom and a dedicated team of developers, Kamiya’s ambitious sequel plans may soon come to fruition, delighting fans and newcomers alike.
