The addition of AI into Google’s search functionality on its app and mobile platform will enable users to utilize generative AI tools to refine their search criteria, ultimately assisting them in finding the perfect jacket or clothing item they have in mind.

One of the newest features that Google has rolled out is called Style Recommendations, which allows users to rate items within their searches. By doing so, the AI learns the searcher’s unique style preferences and their preferred choices. This innovative feature can be likened to the popular dating app Tinder, but instead of swiping on potential matches, users are swiping on their favorite clothing items. Once users have selected the clothes they like, they can further specify their preferred brands, resulting in Google displaying more apparel options from those selected brands. This level of personalization enhances the shopping experience for users.

Google has been testing various AI tools geared towards assisting users in finding items they like. For instance, the Search Generative Experience that the company conducted in November featured an image generation feature that creates composite images of jackets and other clothing items based on user prompts. This allows users to explore similar items based on the AI-generated images. Additionally, Google tested a virtual try-on feature, enabling shoppers to visualize how dresses from different brands would look on them before making a purchase. These features are now live on Google Shopping, showcasing Google’s commitment to leveraging AI for enhanced user experience.

Google’s introduction of generative AI tools into its search platform reflects a broader trend within the e-commerce industry. Competitors such as Amazon have also ventured into AI-powered shopping features, with the introduction of Rufus, a shopping assistant that responds to customer queries about products. Despite initial hiccups, such as the chatbot making jokes about Amazon’s founder, Jeff Bezos, Amazon has continued to refine its AI capabilities, including offering AI-powered sizing recommendations. However, the nascent nature of AI-powered shopping features means that there may be some questionable outcomes or recommendations that users should be aware of when utilizing these tools.
