2024 is set to be a significant year for Sonic fans with the release of Sonic X Shadow Generations on the Switch in Autumn, followed by the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie premiering on December 20th. In addition, fans will also be treated to a dedicated Knuckles series debuting on April 26th on Paramount+. These developments mark an exciting time for the Sonic franchise as it expands beyond the big screen and into the world of television.
Franchise producer Toby Ascher shared insights with Paste Magazine on the origin of the Knuckles series and how these smaller projects are setting the stage for the Sonic movies to become ‘Avengers-level’ events. Ascher expressed excitement about the opportunity to delve deeper into the characters and their stories through television, giving the team a chance to explore character studies in a meaningful way. This approach allows for a more in-depth look at supporting characters and the opportunity to build them out in unique and interesting ways.
Ascher also drew parallels between the upcoming Knuckles series and the third Sonic movie to Sega’s classic Sonic 3 & Knuckles game. Released for the Mega Drive / Genesis in 1994, players had the ability to combine Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Sonic and Knuckles to create a comprehensive gaming experience. This nod to the classic game adds an extra layer of excitement for fans, creating a cool easter egg within the Sonic universe that pays homage to its roots.
Building Richer Narratives
While some may raise eyebrows at Ascher’s comparison of the Sonic movies to the Avengers franchise, there is merit in his vision for the Sonic universe. Each movie has introduced new characters and expanded the world in significant ways, paving the path for larger storytelling opportunities. Paramount Pictures has found success with the franchise, with the second movie surpassing $400 million in box office revenue and breaking records as the highest-grossing video game movie in the US.
Looking Ahead
As the Sonic franchise continues to evolve and grow, fans can look forward to an exciting lineup of content in 2024. With the Knuckles series providing a new lens into the Sonic universe and the Sonic 3 movie promising an epic adventure, it’s clear that there are big things on the horizon for Sonic fans.
