Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s RPG Progression Revealed

Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s RPG Progression Revealed

The recent unveiling of Dragon Age: The Veilguard at Summer Game Fest left many fans intrigued by the game’s resemblance to its intergalactic sibling, Mass Effect. From ability wheels to three-man squads and the absence of an open world, it seemed like Veilguard was taking inspiration from the renowned series. However, director Corinne Busche has emphasized that the RPG progression in Veilguard is vastly different from that of Mass Effect.

Deep RPG Progression

In an interview with RPG Site, Corinne Busche described the progression system in Dragon Age: The Veilguard as “incredibly deep.” Drawing a comparison to Mass Effect, she stated, “I really view Mass Effect as an ARPG – big action, minor RPG. We’re almost the total inverse of that.” This shift indicates a focus on role-playing elements rather than the explosive combat sequences that have become synonymous with Mass Effect.

Surprisingly, Busche revealed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard drew inspiration from Final Fantasy 10’s Sphere Grid and Final Fantasy 12’s License Board when designing its progression system. The player character’s skill trees are depicted as sprawling, “web-like” menus that allow for a wide range of customization and flexibility. Each class features a unique skill tree that branches off into three specializations, offering players a diverse set of choices for character development.

Apart from the specializations, the regular skill trees in Dragon Age: The Veilguard are divided into three sections, enabling players to focus on specific builds. This segmentation allows for a more nuanced approach to character progression, encouraging players to tailor their skills to suit their preferred playstyle. By incorporating intricate skill trees reminiscent of classic RPGs, Veilguard aims to provide a rich and immersive role-playing experience for fans of the genre.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s RPG progression stands out for its depth and complexity, setting it apart from its action-oriented counterparts. With influences from iconic RPGs like Final Fantasy and a strong emphasis on customization, the game promises to deliver a compelling and rewarding experience for players seeking a deep role-playing adventure. As more details are unveiled about Dragon Age: The Veilguard, fans can look forward to exploring the intricate web of skill trees and crafting their own unique journey through the mystical world of Thedas.
