Boeing’s Starliner capsule has faced numerous delays and setbacks since its inception. The latest delay occurred on June 1st when the scheduled crewed launch was scrubbed less than 4 minutes before liftoff. This delay marks yet another hurdle for the Starliner, which has had its fair share of issues in the past. From a failed mission in 2019 to a helium leak that NASA has decided not to repair due to potential mission risks, the Starliner has been plagued with technical challenges.
Following the scrubbed launch, Boeing, NASA, and the United Launch Alliance (ULA) are now targeting a June 2nd crewed launch for the Starliner capsule. The ULA is currently investigating why a ground launch sequencer did not enter the correct operational configuration, causing an automatic hold. According to ULA CEO Tory Bruno, the issue stemmed from a slow response from one of the three redundant launch sequencers. If the fix is as simple as replacing a card, the launch will proceed on June 2nd. Otherwise, it may be pushed back to June 5th or 6th.
The upcoming launch is crucial for Boeing’s Starliner as it will be the first time the capsule flies with human beings on board. The mission is intended to take two US astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, to the International Space Station (ISS) for testing of the Starliner and its subsystems. This testing is a prerequisite for NASA’s final certification of the craft for rotational missions to the ISS. Despite previous setbacks, Boeing remains committed to the success of the Starliner program.
Boeing’s Starliner is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which aims to leverage private sector expertise for the development of spacecraft. SpaceX is another key player in this program and has been successfully launching NASA astronauts since 2020.
