The Boeing Starliner spacecraft recently made headlines when it successfully completed its uncrewed flight back to Earth, according to an announcement from NASA. The return marked the end of the Starliner’s most recent flight test, which was delayed by several months. As a result, NASA astronauts Barry “Butch” Wilmore and Suni Williams are now stuck aboard the International Space Station until next year.
The Starliner touched down right on schedule at 12:01 AM ET at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico, as reported by NASA. Agency officials were quick to praise the successful descent, highlighting the hard work of the team involved in the entire flight test. Ken Bowersox, an associate administrator at NASA Headquarters in Washington, expressed his pride in the team’s efforts, despite the need for the uncrewed return: “I am extremely proud of the work our collective team put into this entire flight test, and we are pleased to see Starliner’s safe return.”
Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, also emphasized the importance of the test flight in preparing for future missions involving the Starliner system. He acknowledged that the mission provided valuable insights into the spacecraft’s capabilities in extreme conditions. The flight originally encountered issues with helium leaks, although NASA deemed them acceptable. However, further leaks and problems with the reaction control thrusters prompted a delay in the return flight.
Looking ahead, NASA anticipates that astronauts Wilmore and Williams will return to Earth aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule once the agency’s Crew-9 mission concludes in early 2025. The successful return of the Boeing Starliner capsule underscores the complexities and challenges of space exploration, highlighting the need for thorough testing and preparation before crewed missions can proceed.
While the delayed timeline and technical issues faced by the Starliner were setbacks, the mission ultimately provided valuable insights for NASA and Boeing. The successful return of the spacecraft marks a significant milestone in advancing commercial crew capabilities and preparing for future missions to space.
