One year after the release of Baldur’s Gate 3, developers at Larian Studios reflected on the game’s unconventional bear nookie scene and how it reshaped perceptions of the game. During the PAX West 2024 Baldur’s Gate 3: A Retrospective panel, team members discussed how showcasing this particular scene during a pre-launch livestream altered the course of the project. When the scene, in which the player character courts a druid in bear form, was revealed, it sparked a plethora of memes, mild controversy, and a surge of attention towards the game.
The decision to showcase the bear nookie scene prior to the game’s launch was not without its hesitations. Larian Studios founder and game director Swen Vincke mentioned that there was internal debate about whether to reveal this scene, as they wanted the audience to have a say in what was shown. Interestingly, Vincke revealed that there was another, more provocative sex scene that could have been chosen instead, one that would have garnered even more attention. Lead writer Adam Smith humorously added that the alternative scene would have had them banned on platforms beyond TikTok.
Despite the initial shock value of the bear nookie scene, the developers believed it was crucial in portraying what Baldur’s Gate 3 truly represents. Vincke explained that the scene encapsulates the essence of the game – a mix of humor, maturity, and the freedom to explore unconventional narratives. In addition to the bear scene, Larian also presented a romance scene with Karlach at the event to showcase the variety of relationships in the game. Smith emphasized the importance of highlighting different types of romantic encounters to avoid pigeonholing the game as solely comedic.
