Just a day after the launch of the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X processors, overclockers have already started pushing these powerful Zen 5 chips to their limits. MSI has reported that a new world record clock speed has been set for the AMD Ryzen 9000-series processors. Overclocker TSAIK managed to achieve clock speeds of 7.4 GHz for the 12-core 9900X and 7.44 GHz for the 16-core 9950X, surpassing the stock boost clock of both chips which is 5.6 GHz.
Impressive Achievements
The 7.44 GHz clock speed achieved on the 9950X is particularly noteworthy as it comes close to the highest frequency ever recorded for the previous-gen AMD Ryzen 9 7950X, which was 7.47 GHz. Considering that these new chips have only been on the market for a day, it is quite impressive that they are already nearing the records set by their predecessors. While these overclocking achievements are remarkable, they still fall short of the highest frequencies ever achieved by overclockers.
It’s important to note that these record-breaking clock speeds would not have been possible with standard cooling methods. Extreme overclocking such as this requires the use of liquid nitrogen cooling, which is a complex and risky process. Liquid nitrogen cooling requires careful waterproofing and gradual cooling of the chip to prevent cracking. These extreme overclocking feats are certainly not for the faint of heart and should only be attempted by experienced overclockers.
The impressive overclocking capabilities of the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X processors can be attributed to the architectural improvements of the Zen 5 microarchitecture. These improvements allow for better power and heat efficiency, enabling the chips to achieve such high clock speeds when pushed to their limits. While the average user may not reach these extreme overclocking levels, it’s reassuring to know that the chips are capable of such performance under the right conditions.
Despite the impressive overclocking achievements of the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X processors, it is worth noting that these chips come at a high price point. However, with the launch of Intel Arrow Lake CPUs on the horizon, it is possible that we may see price drops for these AMD processors in the near future. Overall, the overclocking achievements of the AMD Ryzen 9 9900X and 9950X processors showcase the incredible potential of these Zen 5 chips and highlight the advancements in processor technology.
