Elon Musk’s much-anticipated interview with former President Donald Trump faced a series of technical glitches that caused frustration and confusion among viewers. The interview was scheduled to start at 8PM ET on X Spaces, but it did not begin until 42 minutes later. During this time, those who managed to access the Space were greeted with lo-fi techno music playing from Trump’s account for approximately 30 minutes. This delayed start set the tone for an evening filled with unexpected challenges.
Shortly after the scheduled start time, Elon Musk claimed that X was the target of a “massive DDOS attack,” which he alleged was the reason behind the delay in the interview. However, sources within the company later confirmed that there was no actual denial-of-service attack. In fact, one X staffer went as far as to say that there was a “99 percent” chance that Musk was lying about the attack. Despite Musk’s insistence on the DDOS attack, X was functioning normally, except for the Space where the interview was supposed to take place.
Questionable Claims
In a series of follow-up posts on X, Musk attempted to justify the delay by stating that the company had tested the system with 8 million concurrent listeners on the same day as the interview. However, at the time the interview finally commenced, there were only 915,000 people listening to the Space. Musk reiterated the DDOS claim once again, suggesting that there was opposition to people hearing what Trump had to say. This narrative of external interference portrayed the interview as a significant event that faced resistance from unnamed adversaries.
The failure of the interview to launch smoothly drew comparisons to a previous incident involving Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s announcement of his presidential run in 2023 on X. Just like Musk’s interview, DeSantis’s announcement was plagued by technical difficulties that were attributed to overloaded servers. These incidents raise questions about the reliability and preparedness of high-profile events on X Spaces, especially those involving controversial public figures like former President Donald Trump.
Elon Musk’s interview with former President Donald Trump was marred by technical issues and questionable claims, leading to delays and dissatisfaction among viewers. The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges that can arise when high-profile events are hosted on digital platforms, highlighting the importance of transparent communication and reliable infrastructure in ensuring smooth and successful experiences for participants and audiences alike.
