The Virtual Boy, Nintendo’s short-lived console from the 90s, holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers. With its unique red and black graphics and immersive 3D effects, it offered a gaming experience unlike any other at the time. Now, thanks to an app called VirtualFriend, fans of the Virtual Boy can once again experience the magic of their favorite games on modern devices.
After downloading VirtualFriend, I quickly jumped back into some of my favorite Virtual Boy games from my childhood. Titles like Red Alarm, Wario Land, and Mario’s Tennis all ran smoothly on the emulator, with only minor audio glitches in one of the games. The visuals were as good as they could be for Virtual Boy games, with the added bonus of being able to customize the color palette to my liking. The emulator also features an eye adjustment slider to help optimize the image for each game.
While VirtualFriend provides a solid emulation experience, it does have some limitations. The app supports Bluetooth controllers and keyboard control on certain devices, as well as touchscreen buttons for iOS users. However, it lacks key features such as controller mapping and the ability to save progress at any point using save states. Developer Adam Gastineau has noted these missing features and is working to address them in future updates.
Despite its shortcomings, VirtualFriend is a must-have for fans of the Virtual Boy looking to relive the nostalgia of their favorite games. The app is free to download with the option to tip the developer, and it does not contain any ads or collect user data.
