AMD’s latest results for the second quarter of this year have revealed a positive trend in the sales of its Instinct MI300 AI GPUs. The company reported an increase in sales, reaching roughly $1 billion, compared to almost zero sales for the same hardware class a year ago. This growth is a promising sign for AMD’s entrance into the lucrative AI GPU market, although it still falls far behind NVIDIA’s sales figures.
Although AMD’s CEO Lisa Su mentioned that the company is selling as many Instinct MI300 AI GPUs as it can produce, challenges in the supply chain are causing tight conditions that are expected to persist through 2025. This presents a hurdle for AMD to capitalize fully on the demand for its AI chips.
On the bright side, AMD saw a significant increase in sales of PC processors, rising by 49% to $1.5 billion. This growth is particularly impressive as AMD is in the process of launching its new Zen 5 chips. The sales from this quarter primarily reflect the performance of Zen 4 and earlier CPUs, indicating strong market demand for AMD’s processor products.
However, the news was not entirely positive for AMD, as its Gaming division experienced a substantial decline in revenue by 59% year-over-year. Lisa Su highlighted that this decline was due to soft demand in semi-custom SoC sales, particularly as the console cycle entered its fifth year. Despite some improvement in sales of Radeon GPUs, the overall decline in the Gaming division signals underlying challenges for AMD’s gaming products.
Gaming currently represents just over 10% of AMD’s revenues, and Su predicted further double-digit percentage declines for the Gaming division in the upcoming quarter. The lack of specific information or positive outlook for the Gaming division during the earnings call raises concerns about AMD’s ability to revitalize its graphics segment. This mixed performance in the Gaming division contrasts with the overall positive growth seen in other product lines.
While AMD continues to perform well in various segments, there is a lingering anticipation for the company to make a stronger impact in the gaming market and compete more fiercely with NVIDIA in graphics cards. Despite the challenges faced by the Gaming division, there is hope that AMD will invest in developing new gaming products and technologies to regain momentum in the market.
AMD’s sales of AI chips are showing steady growth, reflecting the company’s efforts to establish a presence in the competitive AI GPU market. With positive performance in PC processors and challenges in the Gaming division, AMD faces a mix of opportunities and obstacles in its product portfolio. As the company continues to navigate market dynamics and invest in future innovations, PC gamers remain hopeful for AMD to enhance its gaming offerings and elevate its position in the industry.
