The Battlestar Galactica reboot, which had been in development for five years at Peacock, has now been dropped by the streaming service. Despite the long period of development, Peacock never gave the green light to the series. However, Universal Content Productions, the company behind the reboot, is not giving up. They plan to shop the show around to other outlets now that it is no longer in development for Peacock.
One potential new home for the Battlestar Galactica reboot could be Syfy, a channel within Comcast, the parent company of Universal Content Productions. Syfy is the same channel that broadcasted the 2003 reboot of Battlestar Galactica, making it a natural fit for the new series. In addition to Syfy, other major streaming platforms may also express interest in picking up the show now that it is available.
Behind the Reboot
The driving force behind the Battlestar Galactica reboot was Sam Esmail, known for creating the hit series Mr. Robot. The new show was said to be set in the same continuity as the 2003 miniseries and the subsequent series that followed in 2004. Although Michael Lesslie was initially hired to write the show in 2020, he later left the project. Derek Simonds took over as the showrunner and writer at the beginning of 2024.
The original Battlestar Galactica series, created by Glen A. Larson in 1978 for ABC, followed a fleet of survivors running from the Cylons, a race of robots that nearly wiped out humanity. The Battlestar Galactica ship protected the fleet as they searched for Earth in hopes of finding sanctuary. Although the original series only lasted one season, it left a lasting impact on science fiction television.
Past Attempts at Keeping the Franchise Alive
Following the conclusion of the second Battlestar Galactica series, Syfy made several attempts to keep the franchise going. The prequel show, Caprica, ran for just one season, while Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, a web series, failed to become a full-fledged TV show. In 2020, there were talks of a Battlestar Galactica movie helmed by Simon Kinberg, but there have been no recent updates on that project.
The Battlestar Galactica reboot is in search of a new home after being dropped by Peacock. With the potential to land at Syfy or other streaming platforms, fans of the franchise can look forward to a fresh take on the beloved sci-fi series. Time will tell where the Galactica will make its next journey.
