The PC market has been in a state of flux, with sales shrinking for eight consecutive quarters following a pandemic-fueled sales boom. However, the latest figures from market analysts IDC for the second quarter of 2024 paint a much brighter picture. Q2 saw PC sales grow by 3% compared to the same period in 2023, indicating a positive trend.
Lenovo has marginally increased its lead at the top of the table, with a market share of 22.7% in Q2 2024 compared to 22.5% in the same quarter the previous year. HP holds the second position with a market share of 21.1%, while Dell slipped slightly to 15.5% market share. The dominance of laptops over desktops, with sales outnumbering by 2.5 to one, has contributed to Lenovo’s top position in the market.
Impact of Smaller Brands
The IDC report highlighted that smaller brands as a group saw a slight shrink in sales, down by 1.1%. This indicates that the growth in the PC market is primarily being driven by major players such as Lenovo, HP, and Apple, the latter holding 8.8% of the market share thanks to MacBook sales.
Overall PC sales for the quarter totaled 64.9 million units, with the year expected to reach nearly 250 million units. The buzz around AI-powered PCs has been identified as a contributing factor to the growth, with AI expected to further drive sales in the coming months. However, IDC warned against being overly optimistic, citing challenges the PC market faces due to maturity and headwinds.
Outlook for Gaming PCs and Hardware
The future of gaming PCs and hardware in the context of the overall PC market remains uncertain. While the PC market is not poised for explosive growth, it is also not in a state of terminal decline. The traditional desktop PC, such as Lenovo’s Legion Tower 5i, is evolving into a niche player in the market as laptops continue to dominate sales.
The PC market is experiencing a period of transition, with major players like Lenovo, HP, and Apple driving growth while smaller brands struggle to maintain their sales. The influx of AI technology is expected to shape the future of PC sales, but challenges in the market pose a threat to sustained growth. As the gaming industry continues to evolve, the role of gaming PCs and hardware within the broader PC market will be crucial in determining the market’s trajectory in the years to come.
