When encountering the fearsome bosses in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, one particular boss that stands out is the Dancing Lion. Inspired by Chinese Lion dances, this festive and prancing terror may initially seem like another grotesque creation of grafted abomination. However, the reality is far from what you might expect. Upon closer inspection, it is revealed that the Dancing Lion boss is simply two guys in a lion suit. Yes, you read that right. Two individuals, not even sewn together mouth to backside like in the grotesque imagery of the Human Centipede.
The revelation of the truth behind the Dancing Lion boss comes from a video by Youtuber BonfireVN, as reported by PCGamer. In the video, the boss’s costume is removed, exposing the two individuals inside. Furthermore, during combat, the antics of the duo make the fight appear rather comical. While the front half of the lion may be responsible for the eye-catching AOE attacks, it is the back half that seems to be defying the laws of physics by doing all the heavy lifting. This aspect of the fight may prompt players to chuckle at the absurdity, akin to a school bully mocking a pantomime rehearsal.
As a player, the depiction of hidden details by developers in games often evokes a mix of emotions. While it is admirable when developers take the time to include elements that may never be fully visible to the player, such as intricate landscapes and character skeletons, it also raises questions. Could the developers have taken a more meta approach with the Dancing Lion boss? Perhaps incorporating From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki into the lion, akin to the Icon Of Sin in the Doom series. Imagining Miyazaki as the front half of the lion sparks curiosity about who would embody the back half with equal talent and stage presence.
Despite the intriguing details surrounding the Dancing Lion boss, the overall reception of Shadow of the Erdtree on Steam has been mixed. A notable portion of negative feedback from players cites the game’s difficulty as a significant drawback. This divisive reception highlights the importance of balancing challenging gameplay with player enjoyment to ensure a satisfying gaming experience.
