The incident, which occurred on May 21st in Phoenix, involved an unoccupied Waymo vehicle driving through an alley lined with wooden telephone poles to pick up a passenger. The vehicle struck one of the poles at a speed of 8mph, resulting in some damage. Although the passenger did not witness the crash, she recalled hearing the impact. Waymo clarified that the recall does not involve taking the vehicles off the road for repairs; instead, the company can remotely push software and map updates to all affected vehicles for continued operation on public roads.
