For a long time, Monster Hunter has been a daunting challenge for many gamers, myself included. Despite my unsuccessful attempts with previous instalments like Monster Hunter World and Monster Hunter Rise, I have always been intrigued by the franchise from a distance. However, after attending a hands-off preview presentation of Monster Hunter Wilds at the Summer Game Fest, my perspective on the series has shifted dramatically.
The demo of Monster Hunter Wilds took place in the Windward Plains map, a dusty biome filled with life and atmosphere. The environment itself was breathtakingly beautiful, showcasing the attention to detail that the developers have put into creating a rich and immersive world for players to explore. As someone who struggled to grasp the systems and rhythms of previous Monster Hunter games, I was pleasantly surprised by how drawn into the world I found myself during the presentation.
The demo kicked off with some preparation before the hunt. The new deployable camp feature was highlighted as a way to keep hunters out in the wild for longer periods without needing to return to town. Watching the demo hunter cook and consume sumptuous food with the support of a friendly Palico brought a sense of camaraderie to the experience. With a full belly, it was time to set off into the unknown.
The demo hunter’s encounter with an Alpha Dashagura provided an adrenaline-fueled experience. The tactics used to approach the creature showcased the importance of strategy and planning in the world of Monster Hunter. From donning a ghillie suit to sneak up on the beast to luring it into traps set by friendly NPC factions, every decision made during the hunt had consequences that added to the intensity of the battle.
The showdown with the Alpha Dashagura was a highlight of the presentation, lasting much of the session’s duration. The use of environmental elements like stalactites as weapons added a layer of depth to the combat mechanics. Seeing the demo hunter strategically use NPC support hunters to distract the monster while changing weapons at camp demonstrated the versatility of gameplay options available in Monster Hunter Wilds.
Throughout the presentation, the emphasis on the new weather systems and dynamic environments in Monster Hunter Wilds was evident. The appearance of the zone’s apex monster during a stormy weather event added to the immersive nature of the game. The attention to detail in creating lively and evolving landscapes further solidified my newfound appreciation for the world of Monster Hunter.
My experience with Monster Hunter Wilds has reignited my interest in the franchise and renewed my determination to become a true fan. The depth of gameplay mechanics, the thrill of the hunt, and the sheer beauty of the world created by the developers have convinced me that there is much to discover and enjoy in the world of Monster Hunter. As I eagerly await the release of Monster Hunter Wilds, I look forward to embarking on my own adventures in this captivating and challenging universe.
