After years of legal disputes and negotiations between the parties involved, fans of the cult-classic anime series Macross Plus can finally rejoice. Anime Limited revealed at MCM Comic-Con London their plans to release a Macross Plus Ultimate Edition Blu-ray on September 30, marking the first time the series will be available on Blu-ray outside of Japan in the US.
The deluxe $190 edition, exclusively available through the Crunchyroll Store, is packed with exciting extra content. The box set includes the four-episode 1994 original video anime series in a sleek slipcase, a hardcover book chronicling the production of the series through staff interviews and concept art material, nine art cards, and an A4 poster. Additionally, the discs contain the movie and OVA versions of Macross Plus, English and Japanese dubs, an interview with chief director Shoji Kawamori, and more.
The plot of Macross Plus takes place in the year 2040 on the distant planet Eden, where former childhood friends Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman find themselves as test pilots of rival teams in a competition to decide the next generation of variable mecha fighters. The story also delves into their unresolved history with mutual love interest Myung Fang Lone, who has returned as the manager of Sharon Apple, the AI pop star and galaxy’s biggest singing sensation. As Sharon Apple’s advanced artificial intelligence gains consciousness, tensions rise, and the characters must confront their past while facing the powerful AI.
In addition to the long-awaited Macross Plus release, anime fans can also look forward to another upcoming Blu-ray release – Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku. This show, filled with ninjas, samurai, and intense action sprinkled with horror elements, has garnered attention following its successful debut last year.
