AMD recently announced two new variants of the Ryzen 5000 Series CPU at Computex, the Ryzen 9 5900XT and Ryzen 7 5800XT. These new models aim to provide an upgrade over the existing Ryzen 9 5900X and Ryzen 7 5800X, respectively. The Ryzen 7 5800XT, with its eight Zen 3-spec cores, offers a boost clock of 4.8 GHz, slightly higher than its predecessor. While the performance of the new variant is expected to be on par with the older model, the pricing remains a concern. Originally listed at $249, the Ryzen 7 5800XT may not offer a significant value proposition, especially considering that the older Ryzen 7 5800X is currently available at a lower price of $198.98.
On the other hand, the Ryzen 9 5900XT stands out as a more compelling option with its 16-core configuration. This new variant fills the gap between the Ryzen 9 5900X and the higher-priced Ryzen 9 5950X. The Ryzen 9 5900XT aims to offer 16 cores at a more affordable price point, with an initially listed price of $359. In comparison, the Ryzen 9 5950X was originally priced at $799. However, current promotions and discounts have brought the price of the older model down to $359 on Newegg, making the new Ryzen 9 5900XT less appealing in terms of immediate cost savings.
Both new variants of the Ryzen 5000 Series CPUs boast slightly higher boost clocks compared to their predecessors. However, the pricing strategy for these new models raises some concerns. With the current market dynamics and existing discounts on older models, the Ryzen 7 5800XT and Ryzen 9 5900XT may not offer the anticipated value for potential buyers. The real-world retail prices of these CPUs will play a crucial role in determining their competitiveness in the market.
While the initial pricing of the Ryzen 7 5800XT and Ryzen 9 5900XT may not seem attractive in light of existing deals on older models, it is essential to consider the long-term prospects of these new CPUs. As AMD aims to introduce more affordable high-core count options, the Ryzen 9 5900XT could potentially become a popular choice for users looking to upgrade their existing AM4 platform. Adjustments in pricing and market response over time may eventually position these new variants as compelling upgrades for PC enthusiasts and gamers.
