The Favorite Deaths of Game of Thrones Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the creators and showrunners of HBO’s Game of Thrones, have discussed their favorite deaths on the show during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Interestingly, they both revealed that they particularly enjoyed the deaths of villainous characters in the series. Weiss mentioned that the show initially killed off many good guys early on, such as Ned Stark’s shocking beheading in the first season. However, he expressed his fondness for the deaths of Joffrey and Ramsay in later seasons.

Weiss specifically highlighted the deaths of Joffrey and Ramsay as personal favorites. He described the experience of finally getting to kill off these despicable characters as “fun” and a return to the traditional satisfaction of seeing a truly bad guy meet his end. He believed that Ramsay’s death served to balance the scales between good guys and bad guys in the series, providing a sense of justice for the viewers.

Benioff also weighed in on the powerful impact of Ramsay’s death scene in season 6. He praised the decision to focus on Sansa Stark’s reaction to the event, rather than showing the hounds actually mauling Ramsay. Benioff explained that filming Sansa’s smile after Ramsay’s demise was a crucial moment, emphasizing Sophie Turner’s exceptional acting skills in delivering the emotionally charged scene. He commended Turner’s performance and described it as “epic,” indicating his satisfaction with the portrayal of Ramsay’s death.

Similarly, Joffrey’s demise in season 4 was a pivotal moment that many viewers eagerly anticipated. The loathsome character was finally poisoned, much to the satisfaction of fans who had been waiting for his comeuppance. Benioff and Weiss both expressed their contentment with the handling of Joffrey’s death and acknowledged the impact it had on the narrative.

While the original Game of Thrones series has concluded, Benioff and Weiss have moved on to collaborate with Netflix on a range of projects, including the recently released 3 Body Problem. Additionally, fans of the Game of Thrones universe can look forward to the upcoming spinoff series, House of the Dragon, set to premiere in June. This continuation of the epic tale promises to explore new characters and storylines within the beloved fantasy world created by George R.R. Martin.
