In a recent interview with Scripps News, Lisa, the mother of former child actor Jake Lloyd who portrayed young Anakin Skywalker in The Phantom Menace, debunked the theory that her son hates Star Wars. Contrary to popular belief, Lisa stated, “He loves all the new Star Wars stuff. People think Jake hates Star Wars. He loves it.” She emphasized that Jake has been actively watching the Ahsoka TV series on Disney+ and even received an Ahsoka action figure for his birthday, showcasing his genuine appreciation for the franchise.
Addressing speculation that the backlash from The Phantom Menace contributed to Jake’s mental health struggles, Lisa refuted this notion by highlighting the genetic predisposition to schizophrenia on his biological father’s side of the family. She firmly stated, “I believe that it was genetic. And his psychiatrist also agrees that Jake was going to become schizophrenic.” According to Lisa, the mental health issues Jake faced were inevitable regardless of external factors, such as negative feedback from the film.
Despite enduring significant challenges, including a recent psychotic break that led to his admittance to an inpatient facility for mental health rehabilitation, Jake is showing signs of improvement according to his mother. She shared that after 10 months of treatment, Jake is gradually becoming more social and is reconnecting with his past self, described as “having more of the old Jake back.” This progress has brought a sense of relief and optimism to Lisa, who expressed, “He’s doing much better than I expected.”
Jake’s journey has been marred by various unfortunate events, including a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia in 2008, a period of incarceration following an arrest in 2015, and the untimely passing of his younger sister Madison in 2018.
