The Truth About All-In-One Liquid Coolers: A Deep Dive Investigation

The Truth About All-In-One Liquid Coolers: A Deep Dive Investigation

When it comes to all-in-one liquid coolers, how can you be sure of what materials are actually inside? An investigation by Igor’s Lab has revealed that manufacturer’s spec sheets may not always provide an accurate answer to that question. In fact, two out of the six coolers tested were found to not contain the copper parts as advertised, but were instead replaced with copper/zinc alloy or brass. This raises serious concerns about the transparency and accuracy of the information provided by manufacturers.

Copper is known for its high thermal conductivity, rated at around 401 W·m−1·K−1, which is significantly higher than aluminum at around 237. The choice of materials can greatly impact the cooling efficacy of a liquid cooler, which is why coolers boasting full or part copper construction often target premium customers. However, the findings from Igor’s Lab’s investigation suggest that not all coolers live up to the materials they claim to be using.

Out of the six coolers tested by Igor’s Lab, only a few emerged unscathed from the scrutiny. The ‘full copper’ Alphacool NexXxoS ST30 and the mostly aluminum Aqua Computer Airplex were found to contain the materials they claimed. On the other hand, coolers like the EKWB Quantum Surface P120M and Bykski CR-RD120RC-TN-V2 failed to meet the expectations set by their advertised materials. The presence of copper/zinc alloy and brass in place of pure copper raises questions about the accuracy of their marketing claims.

Bykski has acknowledged the discrepancies revealed in the investigation and has taken steps to remove the affected batch from sale. The company claims that the products were produced by a different OEM, which was responsible for substituting copper with a copper alloy. Similarly, Watercool Heatkiller Rad 120-S was found to have misrepresented its materials on its website, using brass instead of copper channels. While some companies are taking action to rectify the issue, it took the investigative work of experts like Wallossek to bring these discrepancies to light.

The findings from Igor’s Lab’s investigation highlight the importance of conducting thorough testing and monitoring of products to ensure transparency and accuracy. It is essential for consumers to be able to trust the information provided by manufacturers, especially when it comes to critical components like liquid coolers. While the industry may still have room for improvement, the scrutiny brought by investigations like this can drive positive change and hold companies accountable for their claims.

The truth about all-in-one liquid coolers may not always be as clear-cut as manufacturers make it seem. It is vital for consumers to be aware of the materials used in these products and to question claims that seem too good to be true. By encouraging transparency and accountability in the industry, we can ensure that consumers are getting the quality and performance they deserve from their liquid cooling solutions.
