Microsoft Introduces Generative Erase Feature to Windows Photos App

Microsoft is catching up with Google and Samsung by introducing Generative Erase, a new feature in the Photos app for Windows. This AI-powered tool allows users to selectively remove objects from their photos, similar to what other platforms have already offered.

Unlike other AI photo editing features that are exclusive to certain devices, Generative Erase will be available to Windows 11 users as well as Windows 10 users. This means that you don’t need to invest in a new Pixel or Galaxy device to take advantage of this technology. Microsoft is even extending these AI editing capabilities to Windows 11 for Arm64 devices.

For now, the Generative Erase feature is only accessible to Windows Insiders. Microsoft has started rolling out this update to Windows Insiders in all channels, including those on Windows 10 in the Release Preview Channel. Users need to update their app to version number 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher to access these AI editing tools.

One lingering question is whether photos edited using AI tools will come with metadata or watermarks to distinguish them from unedited photos. This is an important consideration for users who want to maintain the authenticity of their images and ensure transparency in the editing process.

Overall, Microsoft’s introduction of Generative Erase to the Windows Photos app represents a significant step towards democratizing AI-powered photo editing tools. By making these features accessible to a wider range of users, Microsoft is helping to empower individuals to enhance and manipulate their photos in new and exciting ways.
