Arrowhead Studios, the developer of Helldivers 2, recently made an announcement regarding a significant expansion in the concurrent player capacity for the game. This decision comes after the initial doubling of the capacity just days ago. Despite the efforts to accommodate the large player base, the studio is still facing challenges in keeping up with the overwhelming demand.
In a message posted on the game’s Discord channel by an Arrowhead employee, it was revealed that the team had encountered server-related issues due to a sudden spike in concurrent players. This led to mission payouts failing, players getting kicked to their ships, and some even being logged out of the game. The team is working tirelessly to address these issues but admits to struggling with the scaling required to meet the demand.
Despite the challenges faced, Arrowhead Studios managed to increase the concurrent player capacity to 450,000, up from the previous cap of 360,000. This was done in an effort to enhance server stability and improve the overall gameplay experience for the players. However, this means that some players may still experience queues until further capacity increases or the demand subsides.
Helldivers 2 has seen tremendous success, quickly surpassing the concurrent player numbers of some of the biggest PlayStation Studio launches on Steam. The community-wide mission to spread democracy and engage in robot explosions together has resonated well with players. However, despite this success, CEO Johan Pilestedt has stated that the game will not receive a competitive player versus player mode in the future.
The success of Helldivers 2 has brought both opportunities and challenges for Arrowhead Studios. While the game’s popularity has soared, the studio is grappling with the task of meeting the demands of its large player base.
