The Last of Us: Part 3 – A Concept for Another Chapter

The Last of Us: Part 3 – A Concept for Another Chapter

Naughty Dog’s co-president, Neil Druckmann, recently shared his concept for The Last of Us: Part 3, sparking speculation about the future of the franchise. While this does not guarantee the development of a third installment, it raises the question of whether we will ever truly see the end of The Last of Us. In a Making-Of feature, Druckmann discussed the underlying themes of love and justice that have defined the previous games, as well as the potential for a new chapter to explore these concepts further.

In the original game, The Last of Us presented players with the powerful theme of the unconditional love a parent feels for their child. This emotional connection resonated with many players and laid the foundation for the franchise. The sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, introduced the idea of pursuing justice at any cost, particularly for the ones we love. Druckmann expressed satisfaction with this continuation of the story, suggesting that it could serve as a fitting ending point if no further games are developed.

One of the advantages of working at Naughty Dog, according to Druckmann, is the creative freedom the studio enjoys. While there is a desire for another Last of Us game, the team is also open to pursuing different projects if they are passionate about them. Druckmann acknowledged the privilege of having such flexibility and expressed gratitude for it. However, he also revealed that after years of searching, he has finally discovered a concept that excites him and could potentially serve as the foundation for another chapter in The Last of Us saga.

During the Making-Of feature, Druckmann clarified a previous misunderstanding regarding a story involving Joel Miller’s brother, Tommy, set after the events of The Last of Us Part 2. He emphasized that this story was never intended to be The Last of Us Part 3 and was never even envisioned as a “full title.” Instead, it was a small story that the team had put on hold due to other priorities. Druckmann expressed his hope that one day this story would come to fruition in some form, whether as a game or a show.

With the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, Naughty Dog has shifted its focus to single-player narrative games, a tradition that has defined the studio’s legacy. While the PC version of The Last of Us Part 2 has yet to be released, it seems likely that it will happen considering the success of the remastered console edition. This sets the stage for a potential new Last of Us story, whether in the form of a standalone spin-off like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy or another season of the highly acclaimed HBO adaptation.

It is worth noting that Neil Druckmann’s experiences growing up in Israel and his reflections on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict influenced the exploration of the theme “justice at any cost” in The Last of Us Part 2. However, Druckmann has clarified that the game is not a direct allegory or commentary on these events. As tensions continue to escalate in the region with the recent invasion of the Gaza strip, it adds an interesting layer of relevance to the franchise and its potential continuation.

While Neil Druckmann’s concept for The Last of Us: Part 3 presents an intriguing possibility, it is important to note that this does not confirm the development of another game in the franchise. However, the love and justice themes that have resonated with players throughout the series are strong foundations for further exploration. Whether Naughty Dog decides to continue Ellie and Joel’s story or explore new narratives within the post-apocalyptic world, fans eagerly await any news regarding the future of The Last of Us.
